The Regional Museum in Rzeszów comprises many departments of a regional, but not provincial character, in terms of the exhibits and the collection-keeping activities. The Archaeological Department looks after the sources which enable us to learn the earliest history of human beings and their culture. The items come mainly from excavation sites. Although many of these artefacts are of a unique character, all of them bear witness to the various settlement activities which began in the region during the Stone Age. It is the largest collection of archaeological items in the south-east of Poland.

The Historical Department collects various historical items (handicraft, everyday objects, weaponry coins, historical memorabilia)related to the history of the town and the region, as well as rich archives that include a large number of old photographs. This department also includes the Museum of the History of the Town of Rzeszów and the Underground Tourist Route.

The Arts Department looks after paintings, drawings, sculptures, tapestries and handicraft items which attest to the artistic traditions. When compared to the other areas of the museum, it is this departments collections that are of the most universal character. The Franciszek Kotula Ethnographic Department, named after one of the founders and the first director of the Museum, documents folk culture and art, gathering both interesting artefacts and various source records and documents.      Another department of the Museum is the Julian Przyboś Biographic Museum in Gwoźnica Górna, located in an old village cottage. It would be impossible for the Museum to operate effectively were it not for our auxiliary departments: the Library (including old prints) and the Conservation Workshop. The profile of our institution is complemented by the Administrative Department, which includes the accounting and service sections.

The activities of the Museum involve a number of various aspects. This is not only due to the Museum's structure, but also to the very character of such an institution, traditionally associated with collecting, storing and exhibiting historical artefacts. These functions are inseparable and mutually intertwined. This harmonious development continues only when these functions develop in proper proportions to one another. However, the most conspicuous task is exhibit presentation, which may vary from general exhibitions to highly specialized events intended for expert visitors. The scope of the exhibitions is of an educational nature, in the broad sense, since specific museum-related activities are coupled with those aimed at promoting the knowledge of our cultural heritage.

Our collections are presented in permanent and temporary exhibitions (several of them are displayed every year). Individual artefacts are frequently subject to exchange programmes between museums, both in Poland and abroad.

The Regional Museum in Rzeszów has earned respect not only from its visitors, but also from cirdes of professional art historians. Its reputation is proven by, inter alia, numerous awards and prizes won in consecutive editions of the 'Museum Event of he Year' a nationwide contest in Poland.
